Trimming
One of the most challenging yet fun things that
an editor does is trimming. In the old days of film
editing, trimming meant carrying around a box of
tiny trimmed frames and adding or subtracting
them to a sequence. The assistant editor, who had
to collect just about anything that hit the cutting
room floor, usually searched these tiny little
“trims.” Searching for the trims usually meant
having to “eyeball” each small clip and match it
to the frames that were already in the sequence.
With Avid editing, there is no box of tiny frames.
Today, trimming a digital clip means no trim
pieces. The trim remains intact and usable at any
time. And you never have to search for tiny bits
of film anymore.
