of horizontal and vertical color samples. A
fourth digit can be added to this notation to
indicate the alpha channel. Alpha channel
sampling, when used, always matches lumi-
nance sampling. Examples of subsampling
rates include 4:2:2, 4:4:4, 4:1:1, and 4:2:0.
subtractive color The color formed by the sub-
traction of light by absorption. CMYK pri-
maries work as subtractive colorants.
Super 16 A special formatting technique using
16mm film that creates an enlarged picture
area. Super 16 was originally designed to be
printed to 35mm film for release.
surround The area surrounding an image.
surround effect An effect that is caused by
brightness adaptation of surrounds where an
image is perceived as having lower or higher
luminance contrast.
sweetening Mixing sound effects, music, and
announcer audio tracks with the audio track
of the edited master tape, usually during the
mixing stages of a production. Also called
audio sweetening.
sync (synchronization) The process of maintaining
correct correlation between picture and sound.
sync pop A 1000 Hz tone emitted for one
frame 47 frames before a reel begins. Used to
establish sync with a Society of Motion Pic-
ture and Television Engineers (SMPTE)
leader “2” frame. Also called a 2-pop.
sync word The portion of Society of Motion
Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE)
timecode that indicates the end of each frame
and the direction of tape travel. Can also
refer to timecode phase.
tail frame The last frame in a clip.
tail slate The slate information recorded at
the end of the take instead of at the begin-
ning; usually recorded with the slate upside
down. Tail slates are frequently used in docu-
mentaries in which the beginning of a shot is
spontaneous and there is no time to slate the
event.
tails out Film or tape wound on a reel with
the end of the media on the outside of the reel.
take Filming a single shot.
TBC Acronym for time-base corrector. An
electronic device that improves video signal
stability by correcting time-base errors
that are inherent on mechanical videotape
recorders.
telecine The process of transferring film to
videotape. A telecine maintains a consistent
relationship between film and video frames.
Not to be confused with a film chain, which
is not as accurate.
telecine log converter An application within
Trakker’s Slingshot matchback suite. Con-
verts telecine files to NLE-usable import files.
Could generically refer to all telecine log con-
verters as well, including Avid Log Exchange.
telecine logger A computer system used to
database the relationship between key code
from an original camera negative to video
timecode recorded on a telecine transfer
videotape.
1394 The international hardware and soft-
ware standard for transporting data at up to
400 megabits per second (Mb/s) (1394a) or
800 megabits per second (Mb/s) (1394b).
Also known as iLink (Sony trademark),
FireWire, or IEEE 1394.
three perf (3-perf) A 35mm system that
records a single frame using only three perfs
instead of the traditional four. Used mostly for
television production, three perf requires a
